It’s about how these systems decide what is actually worth remembering. When agents run all day, observing everything, if they try to store it all, their memory becomes bogged down, their recall slows, and learning turns from a focused discipline into a scattergun affair.
We need to get intentional about memory design. If everything is important, nothing really is.

Defining the Memory Problem: Why Raw Logs Won’t Do
Most agentic architectures today treat memory as a rolling log. They shovel everything they see into storage, just in case, and every event is considered retrievable. It’s an appealing safety net, but frankly, it’s unworkable once you scale out. The result? Genuinely valuable signals are buried under business-as-usual noise. We, as humans, solved this dilemma a long time ago. No one recalls every minute of a familiar commute our brains are not bloated memory logs. Instead, we store the oddity, not the routine. The time a cyclist veered in front of us or the morning with a violet sky, those stand out because they matter for safety, alertness, or simply novelty. Our minds notice and encode what departs from the norm.
Agentic memory should do the same. This principle is at the heart of exception-based memory.

I anchor agentic memory design around four operational signals not emotions, but concrete triggers that flag when something needs to be remembered:
- Surprise: When reality violates expectation
- Shame: When a process or responsibility gap becomes visible (exposure, not embarrassment)
- Curiosity: When something new arises that could have future impact
- Distrust: When risk, deception, or unreliability emerges
These signals are not accidental; they act as the tripwires of learning. When fired, the agent creates a structured memory event.
